Section 3: First mission in Galilee (Dec 27 - Mar 28)
In Samaria, while travelling from Judea to Galilee, Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman at the well of Sychar (Dec 27), and after then he stays two days preaching to the Samaritans.
Thereafter Jesus begins his first mission at Galilee (Jan 28).
In Cana, he heals the son of the official of Capernaum. In Nazareth he teaches in the synagogue and the people try to kill him; he settles down then at Capernaum. Near the Sea of Galilee, he calls the fishermen to fish for people (Jan 28). At Capernaum, Jesus astounds the people with his teachings and his numerous healings. Then he extends his mission to all Galilee. At the Sea of Galilee, after preaching from Peter's boat, he performs the miraculous fishing. Then follow more cures: (a leper, a paralytic) and the call to Matthew at Capernaum (Mar 28).
He is questioned because his disciples don't fast, but Jesus justifies them: "New wines in new wineskins".

 Jesus at Samaria
Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well

4:1  Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
4:2  (although Jesus himself didn't baptize, but his disciples),
4:3  he left Judea, and departed into Galilee.
4:4  He needed to pass through Samaria.
4:5  So he came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son, Joseph.
4:6  Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being tired from his journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
4:7  A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."
4:8  For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
4:9  The Samaritan woman therefore said to him, "How is it that you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
4:10  Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."
4:11  The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. From where then have you that living water?
4:12  Are you greater than our father, Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, as did his children, and his cattle?"
4:13  Jesus answered her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again,
4:14  but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."
4:15  The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I don't get thirsty, neither come all the way here to draw."
4:16  Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here."
4:17  The woman answered, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You said well, 'I have no husband,'
4:18  for you have had five husbands; and he whom you now have is not your husband. This you have said truly."
4:19  The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.
4:20  Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship."
4:21  Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour comes, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, will you worship the Father.
4:22  You worship that which you don't know. We worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.
4:23  But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshippers.
4:24  God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."
4:25  The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah comes," (he who is called Christ). "When he has come, he will declare to us all things."
4:26  Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who speaks to you."
Jesus and the disciples: the real food

4:27  At this, his disciples came. They marveled that he was speaking with a woman; yet no one said, "What are you looking for?" or, "Why do you speak with her?"
4:28  So the woman left her water pot, and went away into the city, and said to the people,
4:29  "Come, see a man who told me everything that I did. Can this be the Christ?"
4:30  They went out of the city, and were coming to him.
4:31  In the meanwhile, the disciples urged him, saying, "Rabbi, eat."
4:32  But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you don't know about."
4:33  The disciples therefore said one to another, "Has anyone brought him something to eat?"
4:34  Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work.
4:35  Don't you say, 'There are yet four months until the harvest?' Behold, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and look at the fields, that they are white for harvest already.
4:36  He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit to eternal life; that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.
4:37  For in this the saying is true, 'One sows, and another reaps.'
4:38  I sent you to reap that for which you haven't labored. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor."
Jesus stays two days preaching to the Samaritans

4:39  From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman, who testified, "He told me everything that I did."
4:40  So when the Samaritans came to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed there two days.
4:41  Many more believed because of his word.
4:42  They said to the woman, "Now we believe, not because of your speaking; for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world."
Jesus begins his first mission in Galilee

4:12  Now when Jesus heard that John was delivered up, he withdrew into Galilee.
4:17  From that time, Jesus began to preach, and to say, "Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand."
1:14  Now after John was taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God,
1:15  and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand! Repent, and believe in the gospel."
4:14  Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and news about him spread through all the surrounding area.
4:15  He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
4:43  After the two days he went out from there and went into Galilee.
4:44  For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
4:45  So when he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also went to the feast.
At Cana: cure of the official's son from Capernaum

4:46  Jesus came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water into wine. There was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum.
4:47  When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to him, and begged him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
4:48  Jesus therefore said to him, "Unless you see signs and wonders, you will in no way believe."
4:49  The nobleman said to him, "Sir, come down before my child dies."
4:50  Jesus said to him, "Go your way. Your son lives." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.
4:51  As he was now going down, his servants met him and reported, saying "Your child lives!"
4:52  So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. They said therefore to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour, the fever left him."
4:53  So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, "Your son lives." He believed, as did his whole house.
4:54  This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judea into Galilee.
At Nazareth: Jesus teachs in the synagogue, and the people try to kill him

4:16  He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.
4:17  The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened the book, and found the place where it was written,
4:18  "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, Because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim release to the captives, Recovering of sight to the blind, To deliver those who are crushed,
4:19  And to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."
4:20  He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him.
4:21  He began to tell them, "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."
4:22  All testified about him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth, and they said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"
4:23  He said to them, "Doubtless you will tell me this parable, 'Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.'"
4:24  He said, "Most assuredly I tell you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.
4:25  But truly I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land.
4:26  Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
4:27  There were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman, the Syrian."
4:28  They were all filled with wrath in the synagogue, as they heard these things.
4:29  They rose up, threw him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill that their city was built on, that they might throw him off the cliff.
4:30  But he, passing through the midst of them, went his way.

 Jesus settles at Capernaum

4:13  Leaving Nazareth, he came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
4:14  that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,
4:15  "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, Toward the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles,
4:16  The people who sat in darkness saw a great light, To those who sat in the region and shadow of death, To them light has dawned."
4:31  He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. He was teaching them on the Sabbath day,

 Calling to the fishermen

4:18  Walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers: Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
4:19  He said to them, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers for men."
4:20  They immediately left their nets and followed him.
4:21  Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them.
4:22  They immediately left the boat and their father, and followed him.
1:16  Passing along by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea, for they were fishermen.
1:17  Jesus said to them, "Come after me, and I will make you into fishers for men."
1:18  Immediately they left their nets, and followed him.
1:19  Going on a little further from there, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets.
1:20  Immediately he called them, and they left their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired servants, and went after him.

 Several healings
Healing a demoniac in a synagogue, at Capernaum

1:21  They went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath day he entered into the synagogue and taught.
1:22  They were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as having authority, and not as the scribes.
1:23  Immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,
1:24  saying, "Ha! What do we have to do with you, Jesus, you Nazarene? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are: the Holy One of God!"
1:25  Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"
1:26  The unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him.
1:27  They were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching? For with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him!"
1:28  The report of him went out immediately everywhere into all the region of Galilee and its surrounding area.
4:32  and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority.
4:33  In the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,
4:34  saying, "Ah! what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are: the Holy One of God!"
4:35  Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" When the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm.
4:36  Amazement came on all, and they spoke together, one with another, saying, "What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!"
4:37  News about him went out into every place of the surrounding region.

 Healing Peters's mother-in-law

8:14  When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother lying sick with a fever.
8:15  He touched her hand, and the fever left her. She got up and served him.
1:29  Immediately, when they had come out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
1:30  Now Simon's wife's mother lay sick with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.
1:31  He came and took her by the hand, and raised her up. The fever left her, and she served them.
4:38  He rose up from the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a great fever, and they begged him for her.
4:39  He stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her. Immediately she rose up and served them.

 More healings at the sunset

8:16  When evening came, they brought to him many possessed with demons. He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick;
8:17  that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying: "He took our infirmities, and bore our diseases."
1:32  At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to him all who were sick, and those who were possessed by demons.
1:33  All the city was gathered together at the door.
1:34  He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. He didn't allow the demons to speak, because they knew him.
4:40  When the sun was setting, all those who had any sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
4:41  Demons also came out from many, crying out, and saying, "You are the Christ, the Son of God!" Rebuking them, he didn't allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

 Out of Capernaum

1:35  Early in the night, he rose up and went out, and departed into a deserted place, and prayed there.
1:36  Simon and those who were with him followed after him;
1:37  and they found him, and told him, "Everyone is looking for you."
1:38  He said to them, "Let's go elsewhere into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because for this reason I came forth."
4:42  When it was day, he departed and went into an uninhabited place, and the multitudes looked for him, and came to him, and held on to him, so that he wouldn't go away from them.
4:43  But he said to them, "I must preach the good news of the Kingdom of God to the other cities also. For this reason I have been sent."

 Missionary tours through Galilee

4:23  Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
4:24  The report about him went out into all Syria. They brought to him all who were sick, afflicted with various diseases and torments, possessed with demons, epileptics, and paralytics; and he healed them.
4:25  Great multitudes from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and from beyond the Jordan followed him.
1:39  He went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out demons.
4:44  He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

 Preaching from Peter's boat

5:1  Now it happened, while the multitude pressed on him and heard the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret.
5:2  He saw two boats standing by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
5:3  He entered into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.

 The miraculous fishing

5:4  When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch."
5:5  Simon answered him, "Master, we worked all night, and took nothing; but at your word I will let down the net."
5:6  When they had done this, they caught a great multitude of fish, and their net was breaking.
5:7  They beckoned to their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. They came, and filled both boats, so that they began to sink.
5:8  But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord."
5:9  For he was amazed, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had caught;
5:10  and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid. From now on you will be catching people alive."
5:11  When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything, and followed him.

 More healings
 Jesus heals a leper

8:1  When he came down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.
8:2  Behold, a leper came to him and worshiped him, saying, "Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean."
8:3  Jesus stretched out his hand, and touched him, saying, "I want to. Be made clean." Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
8:4  Jesus said to him, "See that you tell nobody, but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."
1:40  There came to him a leper, begging him, kneeling down to him, and saying to him, "If you want to, you can make me clean."
1:41  Being moved with compassion, he stretched out his hand, and touched him, and said to him, "I want to. Be made clean."
1:42  When he had said this, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was made clean.
1:43  He strictly warned him, and immediately sent him out,
1:44  and said to him, "See you say nothing to anybody, but go show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing the things which Moses commanded, for a testimony to them."
1:45  But he went out, and began to proclaim it much, and to spread about the matter, so that Jesus could no more openly enter into a city, but was outside in desert places: and they came to him from everywhere.
5:12  It happened, while he was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man full of leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell on his face, and begged him, saying, "Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean."
5:13  He stretched out his hand, and touched him, saying, "I want to. Be made clean." Immediately the leprosy left him.
5:14  He charged him to tell no one, "But go your way, and show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing according to what Moses commanded, for a testimony to them."
5:15  But the report concerning him spread much more, and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
5:16  But he withdrew himself into the desert, and prayed.

 Cure of a paralytic

9:1  He entered into a boat, and crossed over, and came into his own city.
9:2  Behold, they brought to him a man who was paralyzed, lying on a bed. Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, "Son, cheer up! Your sins are forgiven you."
9:3  Behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man blasphemes."
9:4  Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts?
9:5  For which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven;' or to say, 'Get up, and walk?'
9:6  But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins..." (then he said to the paralytic), "Get up, and take up your mat, and go up to your house."
9:7  He arose and departed to his house.
9:8  But when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
2:1  When he entered again into Capernaum after some days, it was heard that he was in the house.
2:2  Immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even around the door; and he spoke the word to them.
2:3  Four people came, carrying a paralytic to him.
2:4  When they could not come near to him for the crowd, they removed the roof where he was. When they had broken it up, they let down the mat that the paralytic was lying on.
2:5  Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven you."
2:6  But there were some of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
2:7  "Why does this man speak blasphemies like that? Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
2:8  Immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you reason these things in your hearts?
2:9  Which is easier, to tell the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven;' or to say, 'Arise, and take up your bed, and walk?'
2:10  But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--he said to the paralytic--
2:11  "I tell you, arise, take up your mat, and go to your house."
2:12  He arose, and immediately took up the mat, and went out in front of them all; so that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"
5:17  It happened on one of those days, that he was teaching; and there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every village of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. The power of the Lord was with him to heal them.
5:18  Behold, men brought a paralyzed man on a cot, and they sought to bring him in to lay before Jesus.
5:19  Not finding a way to bring him in because of the multitude, they went up to the housetop, and let him down through the tiles with his cot into the midst before Jesus.
5:20  Seeing their faith, he said to him, "Man, your sins are forgiven you."
5:21  The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, "Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?"
5:22  But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, answered them, "Why are you reasoning so in your hearts?
5:23  Which is easier to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you;' or to say, 'Arise and walk?'
5:24  But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" (he said to the paralyzed man), "I tell you, arise, and take up your cot, and go to your house."
5:25  Immediately he rose up before them, and took up that which he was laying on, and departed to his house, glorifying God.
5:26  Amazement took hold on all, and they glorified God. They were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen strange things today."

Matthew is called to be a disciple

9:9  As Jesus passed by from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax collection office. He said to him, "Follow me." He got up and followed him.
9:10  It happened as he sat in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples.
9:11  When the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
9:12  When Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do.
9:13  But you go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
2:13  He went out again by the seaside. All the multitude came to him, and he taught them.
2:14  As he passed by, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he arose and followed him.
2:15  It happened, that he was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners sat down with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many, and they followed him.
2:16  The scribes and the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, "Why is it that he eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?"
2:17  When Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
5:27  After these things he went out, and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office, and said to him, "Follow me!"
5:28  He left everything, and rose up and followed him.
5:29  Levi made a great feast for him in his house. There was a great crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining with them.
5:30  Their scribes and the Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?"
5:31  Jesus answered them, "Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do.
5:32  I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

 The question of fasting:

9:14  Then John's disciples came to him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don't fast?"
9:15  Jesus said to them, "Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
9:16  No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch would tear away from the garment, and a worse hole is made.
9:17  Neither do people put new wine into old wineskins, or else the skins would burst, and the wine be spilled, and the skins ruined. No, they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved."
2:18  John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and asked him, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don't fast?"
2:19  Jesus said to them, "Can the groomsmen fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they can't fast.
2:20  But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then will they fast in that day.
2:21  No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, or else the patch shrinks and the new tears away from the old, and a worse hole is made.
2:22  No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine pours out, and the skins will be destroyed; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins."
5:33  They said to him, "Why do John's disciples often fast and pray, likewise also the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink?"
5:34  He said to them, "Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
5:35  But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast in those days."
5:36  He also told a parable to them. "No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old garment, or else he will tear the new, and also the piece from the new will not match the old.
5:37  No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.
5:38  But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.
5:39  No man having drunk old wine immediately desires new, for he says, 'The old is better.'"
